Movie: Amateurs

Pulled a film from my Netflix recommendations, due in part to films like Get Shorty and Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and probably in part to liking other films with Jeff Bridges and  some of the other actors, The Amateurs on Wednesday night while the wife was out with co-workers. It started out a little slow, but ended up being quite a hoot!

...

The movie starts out a little slow, a guy down on his luck pondering in a cafe, with more voice-over describing the scene than showing the scene, but that goes a long way to speeding the movie along, so I guess after a while it worked.

The story follows the guy, Andy Sargentee, played by Jeff Bridges, who is a self-admitted "tryer," not a "doer," but he's gonna try, and what he's going to try is to make an adult film. The movie follows as he tries to find funding and actors and develop a script. All of the forseeable mishaps occur, and in true movie fashion he overcomes them. The ride, though, is full of humorous twists and events. It made me laugh out loud.

It's predictable enough that you already know the story, but I wanted to be sure to share that it's a hoot, and recommend it as a fun rental. The apparent subject matter (porno) might put some people off, but there's barely any hint of nudity (Ted Danson is the most nude in the film). While you never see any other butts or boobs, in reality, you don't miss 'em either. It is an actual comedy, after all, not a faux skin flick. It's a comedy about making a skin flick.
